The Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg match-up is different from your other Zerg vs Terran/Protoss match-ups. Instead of reacting to your opponents strategy you can be more active – and have to be more active if you want to win!
There are quite a few strategies that you can pull off and all of them are viable. It all depends on how well you can execute them. In Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg matches are often decided by the players ability to micromanage their units. Even if the opponent already has a huge advantage in income or units, you can still turn things around if you control your units perfectly.
Here are the most important ZvZ strategies that you have to know about:
Map Control
If you don’t control the map, your opponent will. In this case you will have no idea what units he is producing, if he’s expanding or not, if he’s tech’ing or when he will attack your base from behind.

Not only can you use your Overlords to get vision of large parts of the map, you can take a few links (careful, you need as much of them as you can get when it comes to a big fight) and position them at key locations on the map.
Zergling Speed
Faster Zerglings (aka Speedlings) are stronger than even a larger number of normal Zerglings. They can surround the enemy units more effective and move faster to another enemy after killing their target. The player who researches Zergling Speed first will have a huge advantage. You have to be this player and use the moment to attack! Your enemy will be surprised a few seconds and those seconds will cost him a large part of his army.
Denying Expansions
You don’t want the enemy Zerg to claim more expansions than you do. That’s why an important Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg strategy is to maneuver your Zerglings carefully to the enemies Hatchery and attack it with hit-and-run attacks. If the enemy fast expands and you play with 1 base, you will have the army advantage for a short time and if you manage to destroy the expansion, it’s gg.
The Speedling/Baneling Strategy
Your enemy focuses on a Zergling-heavy game? The easy way to stomp him is to get a few Banelings and get them fast! Even 2-3 well-placed Banelings can destroy a huge part of the opponents army and cripple him.
On the other hand, what do you do when YOU focus on Speedlings and the enemy counters with Banelings? You can still win the situation with a good micro management. Produce your own Banelings and try to explode the enemies Banelings with only 1-2 Zerglings. It will be difficult but the opponent will loose a lot of gas while you loose only minerals. This way you can get the economical as well as the army advantage.
Roaches?
Roaches are a hard counter against Speedlings, but your enemy can still overrun you if you rely on only a few units. Take a look at the enemies upgrades and army strength and expand your army accordingly. Roaches are strong(!) against Lings, but they don’t grant you an auto-win.

Mutalisk!
Speedling/Mutalisks is not only a great Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg strategy, it was already effective in the original Starcraft. The key is to scout the enemy: How much gas is he producing? When is he upgrading his Hatchery to a Lair? Where’s the Spire located?
If you can’t prevent the enemy completely from teching to Mutalisks, you can prepare by positioning your Queens in your mineral line and even throwing down 1-2 Spore Crawlers to protect yourself against hit-and-run attacks. Make sure you have Spine Crawlers for your protection against assaults of Speedlings and build your Lair as fast as possible.
Once it has become obvious that the enemy has an army of Mutas, you have no other choice then to build your own Mutas or build Hydras to counter them and protect your army on the map. A group of Roaches/Hydras will seal the deal.
Conclusion:
Keep an eye on the opponents army, never let him build more expansions that you have and you have a good chance to counter every build.
