This article will show you some of the most popular and most effective Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss strategies.
Before I start with the strategy itself, I want to make clear how important scouting is in ZvP. Your Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss strategy has to change in the blink of an eye if you scout a DT rush, a 4 gate timing push or a 2 pylon cannon contain.
Especially Protoss are hard to scout because they love to hide pylons near your base and even IN your base to build proxy Gateways and warp in units close to your base. You not only have to scout the Toss base, you also have to scout in and around your own base!
Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss: The Early Game
Normally there are many build orders that are all viable, but when playing against Protoss, building a fast expansion is very unlikely. Protoss opponents often block the building place at your natural expansion with their probe or even throw down a Pylon (who cares about 100 minerals). That’s why I recommend a build order that focuses on fast Speedlings before you head out to claim your expansion. Here’s the build: 13 Pool, 13 Extractor.

This Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss strategy offers you two benefits. First of all you can get early gas and upgrade your Zerglings to Speedlings. Speedlings offer great map control and can be used to harass the Protoss and – if he doesn’t react accordingly – even crush him in this early stage of the game and seal the deal. Second they can hunt down probes easily and clear the way to your natural expansion.
Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss: Midgame
Again, good scouting is everything! Use your Speedlings to sneak into the opponents base. Has he walled in in this one base? Or did he build a forge near the entrance of the natural expansion?
A Wall-In with 1 base usually means the Toss is trying to hide a tech or a 4 gate push. In this case you can sac an Overlord and obtain valuable scouting information by directly flying over the base. If you can’t find ANYTHING this probably means he has a few proxy buildings near your base!
If he’s building a forge, you can expect a fast expansion protected by some cannons. A good Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss strategy is to keep up the pressure and force the Toss to throw down more cannons than he intends to.
With your 13 pool build order you will most likely be able to defend against any 2 gate push. Zealot rushes in combination with probes are very popular and many Zerg players underestimate the power of a Zealot. Build about 4 Speedlings for every Zealot and don’t forget about your Queens when it comes to a fight.
The most feared Toss strategy is the 4 gateway timing push. If you happen to scout more than 2 gateways early on, here’s a good Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss strategy to survive it: First of all, throw down 3-4 Spine Crawler between your natural expansion and the ramp to your main base. Build them close to each other and also build 1-2 Evos (Evolution Chambers) in front of the Crawlers to block the path of melee fighters like Zealots.

Now you build a group of Speedlings, Roaches and Hydras and divide them in control groups. make sure to hide the Lings while you position your other units close to your stationary defense. Roaches are the meat shields and should protect the Hydras. Once the Protoss attacks, hold the position and backstab the army with your Speedlings – this should crush your opponent!
Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss: Late Game
Your enemy will either build a mass infantry or mass air army.
Mass Air – mostly Void Rays – can be countered by Corruptors and Hydras. But the best way to win against mass air is to prevent the Toss from massing the units in the first place. Never engage mass Void Rays with only a handful of units! If you are unable to reach a critical mass of Hydras, your chances of winning will drastically drop.
If the enemies army consists mainly of infantry (including Sentries), you absolutely NEED Ultralisks. Although their fighting power is not very high, they are your only “massive” units and trample down the Sentries’ Force Fields which are most deadly to your own army.
Conclusion:
Scouting, scouting, scouting. When fighting Protoss you have to know the map from the early game to the end. If you can scout the 4 gate push, the Dark Templar rush and the enemies army composition you can react in the blink of an eye and counter the enemy.
