This Starcraft 2 Zerg Build Order Guide will show you the most popular Zerg build orders, when you should use them and when to avoid them.
The 2 Hatch Hydra Build
Goals: Gain the economic lead against a non-rushing Protoss opponent. And get the Hydras out in time to defend your expansion against the Protoss timing push.
Execution:
- Overpool (Spawning Pool right after 1st Overlord)
- Drone scouting (If you see an incoming rush, variate from this build order)
- After confirming a Gateway and Cybernetics Core, expand at your natural expansion
- Produce 6 Zerglings
- Build a quick Lair
- Build a Hydra Lair
- Get a creep highway between your bases

As you can see, this Starcraft 2 Zerg build order depends on the Protoss not to rush. If the Toss is not rushing but building more Warp Gates, you have enough time to finish the expansion, saturate it with drones and get an army of Hydralisks.
The last point is extremely important. If you fail to produce mass Hydras once your Hydra Lair is finished, a 4 gate timing push can easily crush your defenses and end the game. But if you defend and counter-push with a strong army of Hydras, you can seal the deal. GG.
The Speedling/Baneling Bust
Goal: Break through the Terran Wall-In by destroying supply depots.
Execution:
- 14 Spawning Pool
- 14 Extractor
- Speedlings
- Morph 5-6 into Banelings
This Starcraft 2 Zerg build order is extremely effective against weak Terran Wall-Ins. It works only against Supply Depots (Rax and Tech Lab have too high HP) and thus can be easily countered. Make sure to scout the ramp with a single Ling to find out whether or not you can attack. If the Terran has Rax and Tech Lab at front, you have to switch your build order fast.
If you have found a spot to attack, send in your Speedlings first to draw the fire, when the Banelings are close, pull back your Speedlings. Concentrate your Banelings on one Depot. Once it’s destroyed kill off remaining units with your Speedlings and rush straight to the Terran mineral line. GG.
The 15 Pool Fast Expand
Goals: All-purpose build order to get the economical advantage. Is the basic BO for many advanced builds.
Execution:
- 9 Drone is for scouting (for large maps)
- 15 Pool
- 14 Hatchery at natural
Your drone has to find out the enemies build order for this Starcraft 2 Zerg build to work. If your opponent focuses on a 1 base bust, building some spine crawlers and protecting it with an Evo (Evolution Chamber) is recommended.
On the other hand, if your enemy is going to tech to Air (Banshees, Void Rays, Mutalisks) you need to build a Lair and Hydra Den ASAP! If you know it’s already to late, more Queens and even Spore Crawlers will serve as a temporary solution.
Against a Protoss 2 gate push, plant a Roach Warren and use your Zerglings to delay the attack. Roaches and 2 Hatcheries can easily stop the 2 gateway push.
Conclusion:
No matter which Starcraft 2 Zerg build order you choose, it’s vital to scout the enemy and find out his build order. When you are able to react fast enough, you can make the transition to a more effective build order in time.
