It’s the most important unit and most of the times the player with the larger Tank army wins the game. But a lot of control is needed to get the larger Tank army and – more importantly – to keep it alive.
Starcraft 2 Terran Vs Terran: War For Air Superiority (Air Army)
When browsing through forums you will read a lot about how important air superiority is in TvT. Unfortunately most inexperienced players bring the whole topic down to “Who has more Vikings” and don’t know why they need Vikings anyway.

The war for air dominance is all about the sight on the map! When positioning your army you use flying building like Barracks to make use of the full range of your tanks. Barracks have lots of hitpoints and cost only 150 minerals. As long as you can see and shoot at your enemy and the other Terran can’t shoot back because he can’t see your Tanks, you have the advantage.
But sooner or later the other Terran will build a bunch of Vikings to destroy your Rax with their insane range. That’s when it’s your Starcraft 2 Terran vs Terran strategy to fight for the air dominance. As long as you have the air advantage, you can prevent the enemy from getting mass Vikings.
Having the air dominance also allows you to utilize Banshees, Dropships and Ravens to their full potential! Harass Expansions with Medivac Dropships, drop a Hunter-Seeker-Missle into the bulk of Marauders and Banshees can scout, deny scouting and harass the enemy.
Starcraft 2 Terran vs Terran: War For The Best Position (Ground Army)
No matter how important those Vikings are to keep the air dominance, it’s your Tank-Marauder army that wins you the game.
Marauders with Stim-Paks are insane against hostile Tanks but you have to be prepared to loose a lot of them in the process. Later in the game you can even snipe an Command Center and destroy a whole Expansion if you are fast enough.
But the most important aspect of the Starcraft 2 Terran vs Terran gameplay is to get your Siege Tanks in the best possible position. This position is usually behind your line of Marauders or on high ground where they are completely safe thanks to your air superiority.
Winning against another Terran means breaking through his Tank line our starving him out (which means he has to break through your own Tank line). You have to constantly control the map and react quickly on every move your opponent makes. Move your army slowly, carefully, step-by-step towards the hostile base. Once you contain your enemy at a vital spot on the map, it’s usually GG as it’s hard as hell to break through a well-prepared contain.

You have to position your Tanks in a line and not to close to each other or you will loose more than necessary to an attack. Your Marauders are the meat shield for your Tanks, but they are also super effective against hostile Tanks.
Don’t forget to take out the other Marauder Army with well-aimed Hunter-Seeker-Missles.

Fight hard to get the air superiority but never forget that it’s the Siege Tanks who win the game for you. Always find the best possible position for your army and spread it out to get the best shot at your enemy. Scan the map to find out when your enemy is out of position and allows you to get closer to his base or launch an all-out attack!
Ravens and Banshees can demolish the other Terrans army. You can harass, scout and prevent hostile harass and scouting as long as you have the air superiority.
